Modern aviation has always been a self-learning industry. Here, good economics have kept the industry up to date.

The introduction of jet aircraft laid the foundation for an enormous development in traffic. There was a great need to learn from one's own and others' experiences. The authorities, airlines, trade unions and other players participated in proactive analysis work to improve safety. Accidents and other incidents were carefully analysed, which often required extensive resources. "If you think safety is expensive – try an accident" was the message from the experts to the economists. It was helpful that aviation was an industry with opportunities for good earnings.

Today's safety statistics are a result of proactive work done 10-15 years ago that has resulted in changed cockpits, new procedures, better margins, etc. With today's profitability and resource use in aviation, it is exciting to think about where the statistics might be 10-15 years from now.
